The Top Bathroom Remodeling Storage Tips

Are you ready to renovate your home's master bath? Before you stash a bounty of boxes and bins in the basement, take a look at what you need to know about self storage rentals.

What Master Bath Items Can You Store?

The answer to this question depends on what you need to store. Even though different homeowners have different bath-related items to store, some of the most common picks to remove before your renovation project may include:
  • Rugs. Area rugs and bath mats can go into temporary storage before the renovation. The removal of these items eliminates the risk for marks or other debris-related damage.
  • Shower curtains. Cloth or vinyl shower curtains should also go into storage. If you plan to replace a traditional shower and tub with a glass enclosure, you can either store these for future use or give/throw the items away.
  • Decorative accents. The decorative ceramic soap dish or tissue holder can go into storage during your bathroom's renovation.
  • Window treatments. If you don't want to replace the window treatments, remove these items before the renovation and store them far away from the dust and debris.
Along with these bathroom items, you may want to store artwork, shelving units, or other easily removable pieces of furniture.

What Master Bath Items Can't You Store?

Even though you can easily store your bathroom's rugs, shower curtains, window treatments, and other accents, some items shouldn't go into your rental unit. Talk to the rental facility's staff about what restrictions or regulations they have in place. While specific items you can't store may vary by facility, in general you shouldn't add:
  • Cleaning chemicals. These potentially combustible or explosive chemicals are a safety hazard. Leave these items at home.
  • Wet or damp items. Never store wet shower products or other similar items. These pose a mold risk inside of the storage unit.
  • Live plants. Do you have potted plants or flowers in your master bath? These may wither in the dark or bring pests into the storage unit.
As you prepare for storage, leave towels and other bathroom linens out and at home. Even though these items aren't dangerous and won't pose a safety risk, you'll need them at home. Whether you are able to use the shower as you renovate the master bath or you have an alternate tub, you'll need plenty of towels for bathing, washing your face, and washing your hands.

How Should You Store Master Bath Items?

Now that you know what to and not to store, turn your attention to the packing and storage processes. To prepare, pack, and store common bathroom items:
  • Wrap breakables. Cushion breakable soap dishes, toothbrush holders, and other accents with bubble wrap or towels.
  • Pack boxes tightly. Don't allow your breakables to move or roll around in your packing boxes and bins. Add rolled towels, crumbled paper, or bubble warp to the boxes. This helps to fill in gaps and secure your delicate decorations.
  • Clean everything. Don't store mildew-covered soap dispensers or dirty rugs. Clean and thoroughly dry everything before you pack or store it.
  • Roll rugs. Turn the rug over and roll it. Gently tie the rug together with a piece of fabric to move it. Untie the rug, unroll it, and store it flat on the floor to avoid bends or marks.
  • Use a wardrobe box. Hang fabric curtain or shower curtains in a wardrobe box. This type of container will help to keep the fabric damage-free.
After you pack everything to move, label boxes, bins, and bags with the items inside. Choose a space near the front of your storage until to place the containers for each access.
